About / History

The REEL ROCK Film Tour brings the best in climbing and adventure films to local audiences across the globe. REEL ROCK shows are exciting events where climbers and outdoors lovers come together to celebrate and the ultimate in adventure filmmaking. Prize giveaways, appearances by top climbers, and fundraising for non-profit organizations always add to the fun and community of REEL ROCK events. For the sixth annual film tour, co-founders Sender Films and Big UP Productions are taking audiences to the edge of what’s possible. From climbing the world’s most difficult frozen falls, to the hardest big wall free climb and crazed highline antics, these heart pounding tales of superhuman skills will leave audiences wanting more.

History

REEL ROCK founders Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer have been producing and directing climbing and adventure films for over a decade, with devoted audiences around the world. Their work has been featured on NBC, NPR, and The New York Times, and has won a Sports Emmy Award, plus dozens of awards at international film festivals. After organizing small tours for their individual film releases, Lowell and Mortimer realized the huge demand for exciting live events in the outdoors community and combined forces to create The REEL ROCK Film Tour in 2006. In 2010, REEL ROCK screened in over 200 locations world-wide, drew over 55,000 audience members, raised over $15,000 for non-profits, partnered with more than 150 retailers, university outing clubs and climbing gyms, and won copious media coverage and critical praise.

It’s easy to put the blinders on from time to time, especially as you’re thinking about the crux moves of your latest proj. But when you take a second to stop for the stray dog that runs across the road in front of you and take a look around at the homes and lives surrounding you, you’ll see that there are plenty of ways you can help the communities that you call home for the weekends in the RRG.

The RRG area, touching Powell, Wolfe, Lee, and Menifee counties, is home to some of the best people you’ve probably never met. But the economic truth of the matter means they need a hand from time to time. And with school about to get back in gear, it’s that time again.

Update: If you can’t make it to Red River Outdoors or to JATD, stop by Phillip Gall’s Outdoors in Lexington (mapped location) and let the employee on duty know it’s for Kate LaBoone.
So, this August 14th, at the 6th Annual Johnny and Alex Trail Day, we need your help with rounding up supplies. It only takes a bit and we can use just about anything you can provide.

Summer 2009 CTC Donations

A few things that can help:

School Supplies

including pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, crayons, etc.

Clothes

any clothing that’s in good shape and not too well worn is appreciated.

Money

the above two are preferable, especially since the money will go to buying more of the above

If you can’t make it to the JATD, consider dropping it by Red River Outdoors. They’ll also be able to tell you a little more about the event, its history, and its need.

U of Pitt Raises More Than $1100 to Support the RRGCC

This February, the University of Pittsburgh held a climbing competition to benefit the RRGCC. They’re generosity can’t be understatated, especially when their efforts generated more than $1100 for the Coalition’s annual mission to raise $30,000 for the PMRP mortgage.

On February 21st, 2009, climbers filled Trees Hall at the University of Pittsburgh’s climbing gym for the final competition in a series of competitions with surrounding universities. For the past several years during the spring semester, Pitt’s climbing wall has been part of this circuit of competitions known as the University Bouldering Series (UBS). This year, the schools that took part in the UBS were: Kent State University, The University of Akron, Youngstown State University, West Virginia University, University of Pittsburgh, and Slippery Rock University. The UBS is not limited to climbers from these participating schools, nor is it limited to student climbers. Competitors at Pitt’s comp were not only from the schools participating in the UBS; some climbers were also representing Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pennsylvania, and the Pittsburgh climbing community, along with many other climbing communities. The past two seasons, Pitt has decided to donate all of the proceeds from its bouldering competition to a worthy cause. Last year, Pitt donated their proceeds to Conservacion Patagonica, a cause “dedicated to the protection and restoration of wildland ecosystems and biodiversity in Patagonia.” This year, because several of the event coordinators love and cherish the climbing in the Red River Gorge, it was decided to donate the proceeds to the Red River Gorge Climbers Coalition (RRGCC).

On the day of the comp, competitors started to roll in at 10am and registration lasted until about 11:15am. After registration, all of the climbers were gathered, the rules of the competition were reviewed, and climbing started around 11:30am. The climbers were given 4 hours, until 3:30pm, to climb as many of 66 brand new problems that they could get their hands on.These 66 new problems were set over the 3 days prior to the event by dedicated staff and volunteer setters. Routes were graded based on difficulty, on a scale ranging from 50 to 500 points. The scores of the individual climbers were calculated from the sum of each climber’s 5 best scores. If a climber sent a route on their

The event drew a crowd of 66 competitors and raised $1,125, all of which was donated to the RRGCC. At the end of the competition, score sheets were turned in to be totaled up. First place in the men’s advanced category went to Matt Caporizzo, of the University of Pennsylvania, with a score of 2144.5 points. Dan Proudfoot from West Virginia University came in a close second, with 2112.3 points. Josh Wilson from Slippery Rock University was able to steal third place with a score of 1841.9 points. First place women’s advanced was taken by Maggie Hamill, a graduate student at West Virginia University, with a score of 1451.4 points. Second place went to Jame Buck, from the University of Pittsburgh, scoring1115.2points. And last but not least, third place women’s advanced went to Helen Moinova, representing an Ohio climbing community, with 1107 points.

A special thanks goes out to all of the sponsors of the event: the Red River Gorge Climbers Coalition, Sterling Ropes, Black Diamond, Redwood Creek Winery, Mountain Hardware, Metolius, Rock Candy Holds, Outdoor Research, and Exkursion Outfitters.
[reg-invite-table]Every year for the past eight years, climbers have come from as far as Australia, Poland, and the backwoods of your hometown just to partake in the fall festivities. With headlining events like Reel Rock Tour, Mountain Gear sponsored clinics, Black Diamond Gear Auctions, and our always stellar music line-up (The 23 Strings, The Slant Kings), it’s easily the best thing happening on the East Coast.
