On Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, Mountain Gear, in cooperation with Red River Outdoors, will be presenting its 3rd annual UCLIMB event, on the RRGCC-owned PMRP. UCLIMB is a fun event dedicated to bringing people from across the country closer to the outdoors by learning to climb in a comfortable small-group setting with other amateur climbers. Professional instructors will guide you through the basics of climbing, safety and conservation. This weekend adventure is an ideal introduction to the world of rock climbing. Mountain Gear is a strong supporter of both the PMRP purchase and the RRGCC’s educational mission of promoting responsible climbing.

5th Annual Johnny and Alex Trail Day

Come one, come all to the 5th annual John Bronaugh and Alex Yeakley Trail Day, August 1st, 2009. Like in years past we will be depending on the Red River Gorge climbing community to come out and take care of the land you own, the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP), in honor of two great men of the Red. We will be building and maintaining trails and, after a hard day’s work, have a great party with music, food, and “beverages” at Lago Linda Hideaway. Spring Trail Day at Roadside Crag

Upcoming Event:

Mike Driskell has graciously offered to head a Spring Trail Day @ Roadside Crag
Saturday, June 13th, 2009
8:00 am till ???
Meet at the Roadside Lot at 8:00 am (please try to carpool as much as possible).
Dress for outdoor work (with optional afternoon and evening climbing apparel).
Tools needed are shovels, picks, pry bars, spades, rakes, loppers, pruners, and trash bags.

Projects include:

1. Relocate start of main trail closer to the parking lot.
2. Install a sign to display the rules for this area.
3. Install more water bars on trail from parking lot up to the base of Roadside Attraction.
4. Build steps where needed.
5. Redo the cribbing at the base of the slab routes.
6. Remove litter.
7. As many other tasks as we can get done!

2008 was a Great Year, 2009 to be Even Better

In 2008 the RRGCC held a great series of events culminating in Rocktoberfest. The proceeds from Rocktoberfest plus some generous end of the year individual donations have insured that we have sufficient funding to pay the 2009 PMRP mortgage payment! Additionally, by year’s end we had saved almost $4,000 towards the 2010 PMRP mortgage payment. All in all the RRGCC raised over $74,000 in 2008 and we will be looking in 2009 to build on that momentum and raise over $80,000 towards our cause.

To get ready for 2009 the RRGCC will be holding its annual Strategic Planning Meeting on January 11, 2009 from 1pm to 4pm at Torrent Falls. The meeting is open to all and anyone that plans to attend is free to climb at Torrent in the morning.

Friends of Muir Valley help maintain the trails and lands of Muir Valley

The Fifth Annual Muir Valley Trail Day is on it’s way. Here’s the latest information from muirvalley.com

2008 Muir Valley Trail Day

The Fifth Annual Muir Valley Trail Day will be on Saturday, September
27 this year. This event is sponsored and managed by the Friends of
Muir Valley – an Access Fund Local Climbing Organization that helps to
support Muir Valley with volunteers and donations to build and
maintain infrastructure.

This year’s activities will include approach trail construction and
restoration, stabilization of belay stations, and replacing creek
crossings that were washed out in spring floods.

• Snacks and beverages will be provided throughout the day.
• A quality event tee shirt will be given to all who preregister.
• An early evening meal will be served to all participants
. Door prizes will be given out at the evening meal.

Include the words “Muir Valley Trail Day Volunteer” in the subject
line. Also include your real name and your T-Shirt size.
We will meet in the Muir Valley Parking Lot between 8 and 9 AM on
Saturday morning. Tools will be provided.

Save the date of October 10-12 to attend Rocktoberfest 2008! The RRGCC and its sponsors are bringing a sampling of upcoming climbing videos, climbing-clinics conducted by world-class athletes, climbing competitions, outstanding prizes and give-aways from our sponsors, live music and as much entertainment as you can handle. All proceeds will go straight to the RRGCC and help us secure the mortgage for the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP). If you don’t know about the PMRP, check here.

Reminder: RRGCC Open Board Meeting this Saturday

Just a reminder and an open invitation to join the BOD at the Open Board meeting this Saturday at 10am at Torrent Falls. Dr. Bob Matheny, RRGCC President and owner of Torrent Falls, will allow climbing at Torrent for all who attend the meeting.

We’re inviting you, of course, because your input is valuable. The RRGCC and the PMRP is possibly only because of you and your efforts. Please continue to help this effort be successful and plan on contributing to the meetings. An agenda will be available soon..
