October is fast approaching.. and in the Red River Gorge, that means two things: sending temps and Rocktoberfest, presented this year by Keen Footwear, Black Diamond and Mountain Gear.
Every year for the past eight years, climbers have come from as far as Australia, Poland, and the backwoods of your hometown just to partake in the fall festivities. With headlining events like Reel Rock Tour, Mountain Gear sponsored clinics, Black Diamond Gear Auctions, and our always stellar music line-up (The 23 Strings, The Slant Kings), it’s easily the best thing happening on the East Coast.
And better yet: this is a party with a purpose. In 2004 the RRGCC purchased the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP), 750-acres of land with 400+ routes, many of which are decidedly world-class, ranging from 5.5 – 5.14c and the potential for plenty more. It’s an incredible fortune to own such an amazing piece of land. There are no free lunches, though - along with the sizable chunk of land we are also proud owners of a sizable mortgage payment… to the order of $30,000 a year until 2014. So come out for good temps and even better times.
Please take this as a formal invitation to join us in the Red River Gorge on October 10–12 to hang out with your friends and help us raise money for the PMRP. The party is at the Bee Rock campground near the Slade rest area.
On top of the good times, there are awesome deals. La Sportiva will be selling their stellar V5 leather sandals for $20 (retail $40). Keen Footwear is bringing a truck load (really… a semi-trailer-full) of Targhee approach shoes that will be sold for $40 (retail $110). And the icing on the cake -100% of the proceeds from the Keen and La Sportiva shoes sold at this event go to the RRGCC. Let’s say that again: 100% of the proceeds will go to the RRGCC. For us, for you, for the PMRP, get a couple of pairs of new kicks and then sport them around your favorite crags in the PMRP. Mountain Gear is sponsoring their renowned climbing clinics with proceeds going to the PMRP. And The North Face is jumping into act, too, with a silent auction with more gear than your gear closet can handle. (Bring cash as we won’t be taking credit cards at the event.. sorry but thems the breaks)
How much endurance do you have? How long can you fend off the pump? How many bolts can you clip? Come out and prove your mettle at the 1st Annual PMRP Clip and Go climbing competition. All proceeds of the climbing comp go to paying off the PMRP. There will be several divisions and everyone is welcome. For the competition, Sore Heel will be open only to competitors and partners until 2pm on Saturday.
Registration
Registration is open now. Online preregistration and prepayment come at discounted prices (payment at the event will be higher - please pay immediately after registration to secure your choices and lock in your costs). Unfortunately, we won’t be able to take credit cards at the event - so bring some greenbacks, they’ll come in handy. Camping on site at Bee Rocks is included in your Friday and Saturday venue admission.
If you want something a little more comfortable than a tent or a car to sleep in, you might consider reserving one of the two cabins that are on site at Bee Rocks. Each cabin sleeps 4 people, costs $150 per night, and is available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Email us to snag one for yourself - these cabins are first come, first served!

Event central, including where the bands will play & the movies will show, is adjacent to the Slade Rest Area just off the Mountain Parkway at the Slade / SR 11 Exit. We will have a simplified map & final event schedule very soon.
